Pawsitively Chilly: Keeping your Dog Warm in the Winter

Brrrrrr December is here! As the weather gets colder during the winter months, it's important for dog owners to take extra steps to keep their furry friends comfortable, healthy, and warm. Exposure to freezing temperatures and winter elements can put dogs at risk of illness or injury if they're not properly protected. This blog post will cover some key considerations for keeping pups safe, happy, and toasty all winter long.

Monitor Time Spent Outdoors

  • Limit outdoor time in extremely cold or wet weather

  • Pay attention to signs your dog is getting too cold - shivering, whining, seeking warmth, lifting paws off the ground

  • Supervise bathroom breaks to prevent prolonged exposure

  • Consider a doggie coat, sweater or boots to reduce heat loss outside

Provide Warm, Dry Bedding

  • Choose a draft-free area, insulated doghouse, or indoor space for bed

  • Wash bedding frequently to eliminate dampness or mud

  • Use extra blankets for extra warmth

Groom Regularly (come visit us!)

  • Brush frequently to prevent matting and knots, which reduce insulating fur layers

  • Keep fur between toes and foot pads trimmed for snow/ice build-up prevention

  • Clean feet after outdoor trips to remove salt, chemical or ice build-up

  • Protect ears and paw pads from snow, ice, and salt with balms or boots

  • Take your dog a professional groomer in the winter months to ensure your pup is properly prepared for winter

Feed Nutritious Meals

  • Increase food amounts to fuel body heat production

  • Choose energy dense proteins, fats, carbs to maintain weight

  • Ensure unlimited access to fresh, non-frozen water

Notice Signs of Cold Stress

  • Shivering, whining or seeming anxious

  • Acting hungry, tired or reluctant to move

  • Lifting paws off the ground while outside

  • Red or cracked paw pads, frostbite or burns

If you notice any of these signs, bring your dog inside immediately and wrap in a blanket to gradually warm. Consult your vet if symptoms persist or you have any concerns about your dog’s health in cold weather.

With some thoughtful preparation and care, your furry best friend can stay happy and toasty even as the temperatures drop. Follow these winter dog care tips, and you’ll both be ready to enjoy the cold weather!
